Welcome To Ngorongoro Crater

About the Park

One of Tanzania's unmissable natural wonders, the Ngorongoro Crater is a unique fusion of vibrant ecosystems nestled in a geological marvel. This World Heritage Site is considered the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera and provides a natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest large mammal populations.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a mesmerizing spectacle of diverse landscapes, from lush forests to sparkling lakes, expansive grasslands to sandy dunes, making it a natural theatre for a myriad of wildlife. The relatively smaller area makes animal sightings more frequent, making it a standout among Tanzania Safari Destinations.

The crater's geography and year-round water availability also contribute to the impressive variety and volume of wildlife, attracting safari enthusiasts from all over the world.

Best Time to Visit

Ngorongoro Crater is an excellent year-round wildlife-viewing destination, with its enclosed nature guaranteeing animal sightings at any time.

  • Dry Season (June to October): To maximize wildlife viewing opportunities, it's suggested to visit during the Dry Season (from June to October). The vegetation is less dense, and animals, particularly the Big Five, are easier to spot.
  • The Wet Season (from November to May): It has its charm too. Fresh vegetation sprouts up, making the landscape incredibly picturesque. Migratory birds visit during this period, making it an exceptional time for birdwatching enthusiasts.
  • Despite occasional rain showers, the wet season's beauty and tranquillity, paired with fewer tourists, make for an intimate and serene safari experience.

Wildlife

The Ngorongoro Crater is a wildlife paradise that is home to approximately 25,000 large animals, including the highest density of mammalian predators in Africa. Here, you can spot the Big Five – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo – in a single day.

Wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles are prevalent, with their annual migration painting a picture of nature's rhythm. The crater is also home to the endangered black rhino, offering a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of this magnificent creature.

Bird watchers will not be disappointed either, with over 500 species recorded in the area, including the stunning flamingos that can often be seen around the crater's soda lakes.
