Welcome To Gombe Forest national Park

About the Park

Gombe Forest National Park is situated in the westernmost Kigoma district of Tanzania, along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The park covers an area of 35 sq. km. making it the smallest Tanzania National Park as well as across most of Africa.

The park is renowned across the world as being the location where the groundbreaking scientific research of Jane Goodall with chimpanzees and other primates took place. The park consists of woodlands, open grasslands, steep valleys, and tropical rainforests. The sheer diversity is astounding for such a small area. The region where the primates are found is in the dense rainforest.

Best Time to Visit

The Dry Season (from June to October) is the Best Time to Visit Gombe Forest National Park. This is the time when there’s virtually no rain at all, with plenty of sunshine and fewer mosquitoes out and about. Chimpanzees generally stay on the lower slopes and are easier to locate.

  • The wet season, from November to May, offers a different but equally mesmerizing experience in Gombe Stream National Park.
  • The forest comes alive with vibrant greenery and the chorus of birdsong.
  • While rainfall may be more frequent, this period provides a unique opportunity to witness the chimpanzees' feeding habits as they search for ripe fruits and forage amidst the lush vegetation.
  • The wet season also brings fewer tourists, allowing for a more intimate and serene encounter with the chimpanzees and other wildlife.

Wildlife

Gombe Forest National Park is renowned for its population of habituated chimpanzees, allowing you to observe their captivating social interactions, playful behaviours, and remarkable intelligence.

Walking through the dense forests, you may find yourself immersed in a world where the line between human and ape blurs, as you witness the chimps swinging effortlessly from tree to tree and engaging in complex communication.

While the chimpanzees steal the limelight, Gombe Forest National Park is also home to a variety of other wildlife species. Red colobus monkeys gracefully leap between branches, vervet monkeys frolic in the treetops, and olive baboons traverse the forest floor.

Colourful birdlife fills the air with their melodic songs, while bushbuck and duiker can be spotted along the forest edges.
